The Dos and Dont's of Visiting a Temple in Mumbai
73The largest city in India, Mumbai is the commercial and cultural capital of this exciting, bustling country. It is one of the most eclectic and interesting cities in all of India, and has many intriguing facets for the curious traveler to explore.
Mumbai has a lot of diversity and there are many temples, mosques, churches, and synagogues throughout the city. After your flight to Mumbai, it is worth visiting one of these beautiful buildings to marvel at the architecture and learn more about the religious significance.
Especially fascinating are the temples which represent the gods and goddesses of Hinduism. A visit to Mumbai would not be complete without a visit to one of these peaceful and sacred places of Hindu faith.
However, it is important to remember that when visiting temples in Mumbai that they are not just tourist attractions but also holy places of worship as well. There are certain behaviors and standards of etiquette that it is important to follow. If you are unsure how to act when visiting a Hindu temple, here are some tips:
- Don’t wander into a temple dressed in a shorts and a skimpy top. This is inappropriate and you might not be allowed access in some temples.
- Do wear long sleeved shirts, long pants or a skirt, and a shawl over your shoulders and hair. This is a sign of respect when visiting a holy place.
- Do ask before taking any photos. Some temples will have rules against photographing the statues inside, and you might offend if you just start snapping away.
- Don’t leave your shoes on when you walk inside. Instead, leave them at the place provided at the entrance. For a small fee, someone there will look after them for you.
- Don’t ever use your left hand. When you are giving a donation, paying the shoe attendant, receiving holy water, or anything else, always use your right hand. In India, the left hand is used for unsanitary purposes and is considered unclean.
- Do remember that there may be certain parts of the temple where you will be not allowed unless you are a Hindu. Obey these restrictions, and explore as much of the temple as it is appropriate for you to.
- Do act in a peaceful and respectful manner at all times when walking through the temple. Speak softly and give people who are praying lots of personal space.
- Don’t worry if you are not sure what to do, just watch for cues from the people around you. If everyone is doing something, there is a good chance that it is the appropriate behavior. Don’t be afraid to ask if you are unsure.
Remember these important dos and don’ts, and you will be able to act appropriately when visiting a Hindu temple in Mumbai.

Hi JerryJupiter. Love the Hub. I love India and just can't get enough of it.
Useful and well thought out tips - much the same applies when visiting temples in most Asian countries, with a few variations on the main theme here and there :)
This is very good advice when traveling overseas. I imagine it would be possible to accidentally start an international incident just from not knowing what to do!

In India most of the temples follow simple rules decent behavior and decent dressing. But few temples in India follow other strict rules such as not to enter in the main Gabhara (main sanctum where the idol is placed, not to touch the idol, no photographs, etc. In fact few temples in India don't allow women to enter the temples. They have their own specific reasons for that though!
